Building Blocks for Peer Success:Training Peer Trainers Program

Application Deadline Extension: January 15th, 2010

Target Audience: Experienced trainers, peer leaders or peer program directors

The Building Blocks for Peer Success: Training of Trainers Program (TOT) is a four-day training for experienced trainers, peer leaders and peer program directors offered free of charge under a grant funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s HIV/AIDS Bureau through the Division of Training and Technical Assistance.  The purpose of the TOT is to build capacity nationally to train HIV positive peer educators/advocates/counselors to work as part of inter-disciplinary teams to support people living with HIV/AIDS to engage and remain in health care.  Individuals who participate in this training will:

  • Learn to use the TOT toolkit to plan and design a training curriculum that meets the needs of the peers in their community/region;
  • Participate in training and teach-back sessions designed to enhance facilitation and training skills.

Location

The TOT will be held in Tampa, FL, from February 23rd to 26th, 2010.  The training will be held at:

Doubletree Hotel
Tampa Westshore Airport
4500 W Cypress St
Tampa, Fl 33607
Phone  813-879-4800

All reservations must be arranged through the PEER Center. We have negotiated a room rate of $115 per night plus tax. Breakfast and lunch will be provided during the meeting and participants will be responsible for all per diem and travel costs. There will be limited scholarship funding available to cover the costs of hotel rooms only (this may be shared).

Eligibility Criteria

A maximum of 20 people will participate in each TOT program, preferably in teams of two people who will co-facilitate subsequent peer trainings in their city or region. Priority will be given to individuals with previous experience as trainers and who work in peer programs. We highly recommend that all participants receive some training in facilitation skills prior to attending the TOT.  It is expected that all TOT participants will return to their communities, plan and implement peer training programs, and participate in an evaluation of the training experience. At least one peer training must be conducted by May 31, 2010
